Types
Home decor fabrics can be natural or synthetic. Synthetic fabrics include rayon and polyester which are adaptable and durable to a variety of uses like carpeting and upholstery. Natural materials for home decoration fabrics include silk, wool, linen and cotton. These are usually applied to window and upholstery treatments.
All fabrics are made of fibers that make up the used of yarns to weave the fabric. A yarn is woven in horizontal and vertical patterns called weaves. There are 3 basic waves including stain, plain and twill. A plain weave is the most common. A horizontal or warp yarn is woven under and over the vertical or weft yearns while in twill weave or weft yarns pass over 2 or more warp yarns creating interlacing patterns and diagonal lines.
To make a satin effect, warp yarns pass over weft yarns, making extensively spaced intervals in the interlacing. The weave results in the smooth finish you see in satins and sateen fabrics.
Fibers
Fabrics for home decoration are made of fibers as well as those fibers come from variety of sources and may be manipulated in variety of ways. The source of fibers whether natural or synthetic and the configuration of those fibers to make fabric have a significant impact on the color that you see. For example, the color green takes on differing looks when applied to silk and cotton. The cotton fabric will look fresh and have matte finish while the silk will be shinier and richer.
Pattern
The pattern of fabrics you pick for your home can set the tone of the room. The brightly colored geometric shapes create for modern looks while solids and plaids offer more traditional appear.
Texture
A stiff or scratchy fabric like burlap can make an excellent window treatment in rustic design scheme. Soft and durable fabrics for furniture include woven wool, olefin and linen. Sateen, chenille and micro-suede are also appropriate. These fabrics are durable, soft and tightly woven.
Lighting
The dye used to the type of fibers and to color the yarns are all work together to make specific fabric but the impact that fabric has in design scheme is dependent on the light.
Velvet and rich varieties can show a bluish tint in dim lighting which makes it looks more purple compare to red. A pretty pink floral can appear garish under halogen lamp while satin under fluorescent light looks like cheap suit on traveling salesman.
If you are planning to purchase any type of fabric for your home, obtain a decent sized sample of the material and then bring it home. Place the decent sized sample where you plan to use the fabric and then check to make sure the fabric and lighting are compatible.
